  • Segara Anak lake
  • Volcanic hot springs
  • Senaru rainforest

Day-by-day itinerary

4-day trip

  1. Day 16 — 7 hours

    Sembalun to the crater rim

Registration at the Sembalun gate, then open savanna on a gradual climb before the switchbacks to the 2,639 m crater rim. Dinner at sunset and camp on the rim.

  2. Day 29 — 10 hours

Summit at sunrise, then down to the lake

The hardest stage. A pre-dawn start on loose volcanic gravel to the 3,726 m summit for sunrise, back to camp for breakfast, then down into the caldera to Segara Anak lake, where you camp by the water.

  3. Day 3

A day at Segara Anak lake and the hot springs

No camp to strike and nowhere to be. The day is spent around the lake and at the hot springs nearby — a long soak for tired legs, swimming or fishing if you want it, and a campfire with the rest of the group in the evening.

  4. Day 47 — 8 hours

    Lake to Senaru village

The descent from Segara Anak out through dense rainforest to Senaru village, with the flora and birdlife the higher ground does not have. Hard on the legs, and the last of the trek: you say goodbye to the guides and porters in the village.

Read this before you book. The right preparation decides how comfortable the whole trip feels.

What to bring yourself

  • Warm jacket and layered clothing

  • Headlamp with spare batteries
  • Trekking boots with firm soles
  • Trekking trousers and a rain jacket
  • Swimwear for the hot springs

Fitness

Good fitness and some hiking experience required, though four days make it kinder than the 3D2N. Day two is the hardest: the summit and the descent to the lake in one stage.

Best season

April — November

Outside this window the trail is often closed by rain and cloud.

  • Maximum altitude 3,726 m.
  • The same mountain as the Torean 4D3N, leaving by the Senaru rainforest instead of the Torean valley.
  • Both the second and third nights are camped at Segara Anak lake, which is what turns the hot springs into a whole day rather than a stop on the way past.
  • The Deluxe package adds a premium hotel, senior guides, a summit certificate, a waterfall trip, a welcome dinner, and premium equipment.
